Notes for Class Tutor conducting elections ( refer also to why have a student council ? )
- Advise students this is not a popularity contest.
- Ensure students are made aware of the responsibility the position carries. As listed on the previous page, but the representatives must always report back on what takes place at student council meetings.
- Poor communication between the council and class groups was highlighted as the most significant failure and influence on students perception of the student council worth while or not.
- Representations to the council must not be used as an opportunity to gripe or complain, but offering suggestions which will improve the school for everyone is encouraged.
- If a student feels they can show the other students they care about their opinions, and will represent them well on the council, allow them the opportunity to address the class before voting is carried out.
- Any students interested in putting themselves forward for the position of class leader should be afforded an opportunity to address the class as to why they should vote for them.
- Each student must vote for one boy and girl to represent them on the council for the year, voting is by secret ballot. You may vote for yourself.
