- The aim of the student council is to act as a bridge between students, staff and the council board of management. This relationship needs to consist of mutual respect and trust at all times. The purpose of the student council is to represent interest of the views of the rest of the students and to seek resolutions to matters of concern to the student body.
- The council will be spearheaded by the head boy and girl who rotate the activities of chairperson and secretary, with the liaison teacher as facilitator.
- Depending on numbers, circumstances and volume of council work the students have the right to form sub-committees to report back to the student council.
- Depending on circumstances an executive council will be chosen, consisting of the head boy and girl, both 6th year students and 1 Transition year student – to deal with some of the more sensitive issues which invariably arise during the course of the year.
- Meetings: Normally meetings will be held on average every 5 - 6 weeks – an agenda to be drawn up before hand and 3 days notice given in respect of any meeting.
- Discipline: Past student performance will be an indication in deciding the council, especially in the case of head boy and girl. Members of the council may be removed on the grounds of misconduct which is at the discretion of the Principal. If required the Principal may meet with the reporting teacher and the offending student in making a decision. If a senior cycle class leader is removed, they will not be replaced so long as the years still have a remaining member to represent the year group, and gender equity is maintained. If a junior cycle class leader is removed, the class must elect a new class leader within a 4 week time frame. This new appointment must also be vetted by the teaching staff.
- A copy of the constitution is to be given to the members of the council – a two thirds majority is needed to decide upon acceptance of the constitution and for any voting carried out during the year. Decisions to be carried by vote must have each year group must have a representative present for vote to be conducted.
- The council meetings shall be conducted on different days so that the senior students especially would not lose valuable class time in one subject more than another.
- Depending on circumstances the constitution can be changed to suit changing conditions. It is hoped that these guidelines will provide the framework in which our council operates.
